Prevent and relieve back pain

Where does back pain come from?

Both physical and mental stress can cause back pain. Weak back muscles, one-sided movements or long periods of sitting can cause these complaints to occur occasionally. If left untreated or without countermeasures, chronic impairment can develop. The prevention of back pain is therefore very important in spa medicine. The spine has physiological curvatures at the level of the neck, back and lumbar region, which have the purpose of holding the load of the head and chest and cushioning any overloads that occur from the outside or from putting the feet on the ground.

Even though the spine is structured to withstand loads of up to 1000 kg, many people suffer from regular pain in the neck, back and lumbar sacrum. These joint and back pains are mainly caused by poor posture, sitting for long periods of time, stress and few breaks at work, working in front of a computer, driving a car, but also by tension or slack back muscles.

We can help

The relief with chronic back pain as preventively effective therapy provides the REDUCE health concept in bath Tatzmannsdorf thereby. Attentive and loving is the medical and therapeutic care of body and soul in our two spa hotels, the REDUCE Hotel Thermal ****S and the REDUCE Hotel Vital ****S as well as in our spa hotels in southern Burgenland.

Effective back therapy in thermal water

A special form of therapy in thermal water is the extension treatment of the spine (hydroextension) developed in Bad Tatzmannsdorf. This involves a gentle but effective stretching of the spine through the pull of a weight belt. The relaxing effect of the thermal water on the muscles makes this possible.

The stretching of the spine causes the vertebral bodies of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar portions to move away from each other in a track-wise manner, allowing the intervertebral discs located between them, which consist mainly of cartilaginous tissue, to swell more. The intervertebral discs "recover", so to speak, which can be objectified overall by a measurable increase in length of the body by a few millimeters and which lasts for a few hours.

In addition to lasting pain reduction, which with appropriate accompanying measures offers the chance of a life without back pain, the system also serves to prevent herniated discs. Another effect is the relief of nerve roots, especially in the lumbar and sacral region, which can have a positive influence on "sciatica-like" complaints, for example.

This type of treatment has been able to treat back and lower back pain and cramps even in top athletes.

*An X-ray of the spine is required in order to carry out the spinal extension properly. If no X-ray is available, our office can issue a referral to Dr. Eva Maria Wagner, Röntgeninstitut Oberwart.

FAQs on the subject of back pain

When should you go to the doctor for back pain?

In the course of life, back pain makes itself felt again and again. In most cases, low back pain is not threatening and goes away on its own after a short time. Low back pain can be severe, but the cause behind it is rarely serious.

What should you pay attention to?

Nevertheless, one should be particularly attentive if additional problems arise. Symptoms of paralysis, difficulty urinating or defecating, or numbness may be caused by a disease. Sometimes mental stress, stress at work and in family life are also possible causes. In the context of medical care, the mental state therefore also plays an important role and may require additional support.

Are there traditional home remedies that are effective?

Being fit is everything, because the best remedy for recurring low back pain is to move the body regularly. At the very least, a daily routine should be maintained at all costs. Inactivity usually makes the pain worse. Therapy in the form of targeted massages, physiotherapy or therapeutically applied heat therapies are measures that have a relaxing and pain-relieving effect.

What role do our remedies play in this?

Nature has made provisions with traditional home remedies. Our medicinal moor has very high thermophysical properties and is therefore ideal for heat therapy. The naturally contained humic acids have an additional anti-inflammatory effect.

What are the most common causes of back pain?

In 7% of all people affected by low back pain, the complaints become chronic. The causes can be manifold. One-sided continuous stress, permanent physical strain or poor posture cause back pain to become chronic.

However, an unhealthy lifestyle, smoking, an unhealthy diet, obesity and, of course, lack of exercise are just as much a part of this as mental impairment. Anxiety and stress also have a negative impact on our well-being.

Curative mud or fango for back pain?

The most essential difference: mud is organic, and unique in form in our country. Fango is inorganic "sand" of volcanic origin and can be made anywhere. So mud differs specifically in composition and, unlike fango, contains a high percentage of organic substances that can be well absorbed by the body.

The medicinal effect is based on the one hand on the content of anti-inflammatory humic acids and on the other hand medicinal peat is excellent for heat therapy.

In the REDUCE health resort exclusively the spinal extension is accomplished. What is the secret of success of this form of therapy?

Due to the physical principle of buoyancy, a person is almost weightless in water. This alone relieves the spine. If the weight of the diving belt strapped around the hips used during the stretching treatment exerts a slight pull on the body, this effect of weight and pressure relief, which benefits the intervertebral discs, is intensified. The spinal stretching treatment in thermal water thus gives the intervertebral discs more room to expand again, which is not only important for their metabolism, but is also felt as very pleasant even during the treatment.

What is the best way to avoid back pain as a person without complaints?

Keep up the momentum. The more you strengthen your back and core muscles, the more the spine is relieved and back pain is alleviated. Find your favorite sport - many sports are suitable for this. For example, swimming, running, walking or dancing.

Once you've discovered your passion for your hobby sport and put your heart and soul into it, it's easier to stick with it. When exercise hurts, it doesn't mean that exercise hurts. This situation can also be discussed quite well in supervised training sessions with the therapist. This is because such pain is usually due to a certain sensitivity, which decreases with increasing training.

Can a herniated disc occur out of the blue or is it usually the result of many years of back pain?

The risk factors for disc herniation are obesity, lack of exercise, increased biomechanical stress and hollow back (hyperlordosis of the lumbar spine).

Almost everyone knows that proper lifting, exercising the back muscles would be so important for a pain-free life. Why do we find prevention so difficult?

Because we humans are like that. The ideal would be to experience the joy of movement again, as we had it as children. This is one of our most important treatment goals!
