A special form of therapy in thermal water is the extension treatment of the spine (hydroextension) developed in Bad Tatzmannsdorf. This involves a gentle but effective stretching of the spine through the pull of a weight belt. The relaxing effect of the thermal water on the muscles makes this possible.

The stretching of the spine causes the vertebral bodies of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar portions to move away from each other in a track-wise manner, allowing the intervertebral discs located between them, which consist mainly of cartilaginous tissue, to swell more.
